An Ode to Spring Skiing
By: Lizzy Reinholt
Fifteen weeks ago to this day...
I blew my knee out...in an awful way.
I hemmed, I hawed, I screamed, and shouted.
When told I blew my ACL... I even pouted.
"By it's my winter to ski!"
I did plea.
"It's not going to happen this year," they said.
"No sire-ee!"
I understood and said, "That's okay."
"I'll still be optimistic and write the snow report anyway."
At 6am, day in and day out,
I took a look at the snow...the mountain...and the skiing... and got the good word out!
"Conditions are great!” I said,
"It's a day to remember."
"Don't miss this snow."
"Can you believe it's only December?"
Then the sunshine came...and boy it was sad.
Not to ski when Sugarloaf's the
KING of SPRING...I wanted to so bad!
I looked up the mountain...then down in despair.
"I feel fine! I should ski and I have such great vintage clothing to wear."
"But, I know what they said... and I'm not even three months out...
Skiing would be silly...if not stupid... without a doubt."
Then I started to run and boy did I start to get strong.
"Maybe one time down the mountain would be okay... I mean... what could go wrong?"
A fraction. A tear.
Pain, anger, and despair...
That's what my PT said... when we talked about what could result.
"But people in far worse conditions have done it... you make the choice...you are an adult!"
That choice was easy... I mean give me a break
Awesome skiing conditions, sunshine, warm weather? For goodness sake!
So today I did it... I put on those skis
I took to the mountain... and I used my knees.
And, it was worth it... I thought I would cry.
Sugarloaf is the
King of Spring... that's not a lie!
Conditions are great you guys! You don't want to miss this. I know I'm not!
