New in the Sugarloaf Online Community

If you’ve been paying close attention recently, you might have noticed a few small changes to the Community over the past few weeks. Certainly nothing major, and nothing that will affect the way you interact with other Sugarloafers in this site, but some little things that we think will help to improve your experience. One new feature is the Official Community Guidelines, which you’ll find in the top navigation. We added these guidel… Continue

The Run-Down with Board Room Manager Ben Rush

Look up the word “stoke” in the dictionary, and you’ll find a handful of different boring definitions that will probably leave you anything but stoked. What you should find, however, is a great big picture of Ben Rush, who took over as Manager of the Sugarloaf Board Room this year. This guy oozes enthusiasm, and it’s… Continue

Grooming - Behind the Scenes

When the sun starts to mosey on behind the mountain and the lifts shut down for the day, most of us either head home and rest our sore legs or celebrate another day on the hill with a few frosty beverages. We relax, get some sleep, and then head out the next day to find a smooth blanket of s… Continue

Down to the Nitty Gritty

Not sure if you all have noticed the little countdown on the left side of the Community homepage, but we're down to just 17 days left until we open for the season. That, my friends, is exciting. Opening day plans are similar to what we saw last year. Tote Road will be our firs… Continue

The Run-Down with Ski Shop Manager John Byrne

Is it possible to be a ski-bum and live in Florida at the same time? Apparently the answer is yes, and you can just ask Ski Shop Manager John Byrne if you don't believe it. John managed a ski-shop in sunny Florida (that is a serious fact) before relocating back to Maine three years ago to take over the reigns of the Suga… Continue

Capital Improvements Blog - Gondi Line photos and Boyne Beds

Fall has come in rather quickly here in the mountains, and colors have really popped over the past few days. Not quite peak yet, but we're not far off. Homecoming, anyone? Projects continue to move along on the mountain, with the new Peavey valve box nearing completion and the ne… Continue

Capital Improvements Blog - More snowmaking...

With the new line in place on Gondi Extension crews shifted focus this week to Peavey Crosscut and tying the new mainline into Sidewinder, Narrow Guage, Boardwalk, and Lower Winters Way. Basically what this means is a whole lotta welding and a whole lotta pipe pulling. Tools of choice include two welding trucks, an excavator, and a little tank-like beast we like to call "The Bomb." Once these lines are tied in construction will begin on the new valve box, and then we'll start welding hydrants in… Continue

Capital Improvements Blog - The Gondi Line Line

Even though the forecasts were promising bright sunny weather yesterday, conditions up on the summit were anything-but for most of the day. That didn't stop us from haul 825 feet of new snowmaking pipe up Gondi Extension though, thanks to a little help from the boys from Royal Trail Crew. Using a skidder, an excavator, and a whole lotta cable, we pulled two 800+ foot pieces of pipe across Spillway Crosscut and then straight up Gondi Extension to the summit. You wouldn't believe how flexible an 8… Continue

Capital Improvements Blog - The Gondi Line Project Begins

This week we started hauling new snowmaking pipe up to the base of Gondi Line Extension on Spillway Crosscut, and began prepping the trail for the new line that will be going in next week. The summit of a 4,237 foot mountain is an interesting place to work, to say the least, so we thought we'd share a few quick photos. Check back for more next week when we'll be hauling pipe up the extension with a huge skidder...

Maine Woods Discovery

Those of us in the tourism game know all too well that when travellers from away think of Maine, 9 times out of 10 they will have visions of lighthouses, lobsters, rocky shores dancing through their heads. This is not without reason… Continue

Ten Questions with Course Superintendant Bob Bruce

Last summer Bob Bruce joined the Sugarloaf team as the new Golf Course Superintendant, and he brought with him an almost overwhelming knowledge of all things grass. Good thing too, because while the Sugarloaf Golf Club is many things, easy-to-maintain is not one of them. So th… Continue

Sugarloaf Golf Club - New Opening Date

Even though the abundant powder days and long winter were terrific for our ski season here at Sugarloaf, they didn't agree quite as well with the grass down on the course. It was a tricky winter for the golf course and the turf is taking longer to recover than we expected. As a result we've pushed our opening date back a few weeks to mid June, and we'll be taking the opportunity to make improvements to the course, including the reseeding of greens and fairways with new varieties of grass. Our f… Continue

Win a Date at Sugarloaf

Sugarloafer Jen Winslow wrote to Skiing Magazine a month or two back, lamenting her rotten luck in the dating department, due in large part to her ovewhelming passion for skiing and for Sugarloaf. Skiing felt her pain, and teamed up with us to get Jen a date here at the Loaf. Here's what will appear in the mag:Continue

Opening Day Remarks from John Diller

Greetings all, I know it was a long wait, but after seeing the conditions out there I think we can safely say it was worth it. In all of my years at Sugarloaf, yesterday's conditions were some of the best I can remember on an opening day. A large portion of the credit for that is clearly due to the favorable weather here during the past week, but the offseason investments we poured into our snowmaking system also deserve their fair share of the credit. Thanks to our new pumps, new snowguns, an… Continue
