Sugarloaf The Run-Down with Board Room Manager Ben Rush

Look up the word “stoke” in the dictionary, and you’ll find a handful of different boring definitions that will probably leave you anything but stoked. What you should find, however, is a great big picture of Ben Rush, who took over as Manager of the Sugarloaf Board Room this year. This guy oozes enthusiasm, and it’s… Continue

Sugarloaf Snow Reporter SNOW REPORTER INTRO: Kari

As you may have heard, Opening Day will likely not be happening Friday. All this lovely warm weather just doesn't do much for snow making. Even so the crews are out there running the guns on the mountain as we speak. Once temperatures cool a bit more we’ll be good and ready to get you up on the mountain. In the meantime, I figured I could provide you with a little entertainment. My name's Kari and I'm one of your brand spanking new snow reporters. Not to crush your lofty visions of us snow repo… Continue

Sugarloaf Grooming - Behind the Scenes

When the sun starts to mosey on behind the mountain and the lifts shut down for the day, most of us either head home and rest our sore legs or celebrate another day on the hill with a few frosty beverages. We relax, get some sleep, and then head out the next day to find a smooth blanket of s… Continue

Sugarloaf Down to the Nitty Gritty

Not sure if you all have noticed the little countdown on the left side of the Community homepage, but we're down to just 17 days left until we open for the season. That, my friends, is exciting. Opening day plans are similar to what we saw last year. Tote Road will be our firs… Continue

Sugarloaf The Run-Down with Ski Shop Manager John Byrne

Is it possible to be a ski-bum and live in Florida at the same time? Apparently the answer is yes, and you can just ask Ski Shop Manager John Byrne if you don't believe it. John managed a ski-shop in sunny Florida (that is a serious fact) before relocating back to Maine three years ago to take over the reigns of the Suga… Continue

Sugarloaf Capital Improvements Blog - Gondi Line photos and Boyne Beds

Fall has come in rather quickly here in the mountains, and colors have really popped over the past few days. Not quite peak yet, but we're not far off. Homecoming, anyone? Projects continue to move along on the mountain, with the new Peavey valve box nearing completion and the ne… Continue

Sugarloaf Capital Improvements Blog - More snowmaking...

With the new line in place on Gondi Extension crews shifted focus this week to Peavey Crosscut and tying the new mainline into Sidewinder, Narrow Guage, Boardwalk, and Lower Winters Way. Basically what this means is a whole lotta welding and a whole lotta pipe pulling. Tools of choice include two welding trucks, an excavator, and a little tank-like beast we like to call "The Bomb." Once these lines are tied in construction will begin on the new valve box, and then we'll start welding hydrants in… Continue

Sugarloaf Golf School Sugarloaf Golf School Blog - The Fourteenth Hole

One of the famous "String of Pearls," the fourteenth hole at Sugarloaf is very manageable but can easily go wrong if you approach it the wrong way. A fairly straightforward drive leaves you with a tricky approach that has no room for error. The front of the green is guarded by the Carrabassett River, while the woods and a green-side bunker require a dead-on second shot. A good drive will make your approach much easier, and in turn give you a good shot at par. Blow the drive and all bets are off.… Continue

Sugarloaf Capital Improvements Blog - The Gondi Line Line

Even though the forecasts were promising bright sunny weather yesterday, conditions up on the summit were anything-but for most of the day. That didn't stop us from haul 825 feet of new snowmaking pipe up Gondi Extension though, thanks to a little help from the boys from Royal Trail Crew. Using a skidder, an excavator, and a whole lotta cable, we pulled two 800+ foot pieces of pipe across Spillway Crosscut and then straight up Gondi Extension to the summit. You wouldn't believe how flexible an 8… Continue

Sugarloaf Capital Improvements Blog - The Gondi Line Project Begins

This week we started hauling new snowmaking pipe up to the base of Gondi Line Extension on Spillway Crosscut, and began prepping the trail for the new line that will be going in next week. The summit of a 4,237 foot mountain is an interesting place to work, to say the least, so we thought we'd share a few quick photos. Check back for more next week when we'll be hauling pipe up the extension with a huge skidder...

Sugarloaf Golf School Sugarloaf Golf School Blog - Putting

As the old saying goes: "Drive for show, putt for dough." Most of us spend the least amount of time practicing it, but nearly half of your score on any given round comes from putting, making it the most logical place to look if you want to shave some strokes. Putting is also the least athletic of any of the shots you'll try, meaning just about anybody be can be a good putter with the right technique and a little practice. Check out these tips from Sugarloaf Pro Scott Hoisington, and next time yo… Continue

Sugarloaf Golf School Sugarloaf Golf School Blog - The Fifteenth Hole

Aahh the fifteenth. The last in the famous "String of Pearls." It's a pretty straightforward par 3, with big, flat green that provides a great chance to add a birdie to your round. That is, of course, if you play from the blue or white tees. Step over to the black tees and it's a whole different ball game. Suddenly you're 175-180 yards away, and that green doesn't look nearly as big. The various tee options give this hole several different looks, making it unique and int… Continue

Sugarloaf Golf School Sugarloaf Golf School Blog - The Seventeenth Hole

It's not one of our famous "String of Pearls," but the seventeenth hole still offers plenty to get excited about. First and foremost, a good drive will leave you a very manageable approach shot and turn this into a definite birdie hole. It also offers great view of the Crocker Mountains and of Sugarloaf, after you make the turn around the dogleg. On the other hand, leave your drive short or to the right, and you're looking at a long, uphill approach. Add to that a green with some serious undulat… Continue

Sugarloaf Golf School Sugarloaf Golf School Blog - Pitching

The majority of the shots in your score come from within 50 yards of the hole, but most of us spend little time practicing our pitching, chipping, and putting, choosing instead to focus on drives and long irons. Focusing on your short game is an easy way to shave strokes off of your score. Today's video will show you the proper technique for your pitch shot.
