Snowmaking Test

The temperature window allowed the resort to test a system that saw substantial upgrades over the summer
CARRABASSETT VALLEY, ME – Overnight temperatures dropped down into the 20s last night on Maine’s second highest peak, allowing Sugarloaf’s snowmaking team to run a test of the resort’s snowmaking system in preparation for the upcoming ski and snowboard season.

Roughly 75 snowguns came online on Scoot at roughly 6:30am, blanketing the trail in an early season coat of white.

The temperature window allowed the resort to test a system that saw substantial upgrades over the summer, including the construction of a new mid-mountain booster pumphouse that will enable the snowmaking team to run more guns simultaneously. Sugarloaf also added an additional 100 HKD low energy snowguns to its fleet, as well as a number of fully-automated fan guns.

While this morning’s snowmaking was only a test, Sugarloaf’s snowmaking team will begin full snowmaking operations as soon as they have an extended window of below-freezing temperatures.

“These early season tests are a good way for us make sure we’re ready to go as soon as Mother Nature is,” Rich Wilkinson, Sugarloaf Vice President of Mountain Operations said. “We'll be keeping a close eye on the forecast, and we’ll take advantage of any extended opportunity that we get to blow snow.”
